Have We Been “Trumped” By the Trickster Archetype?
What is a “Trickster” archetype? Swedish psychiatrist Carl G. Jung, PhD wrote that the collective unconscious, the energy states within us, are broken down into patterns in roles played out in every day dramas across the world stage. As Shakespeare said, "All the world's a stage, And all the men and women merely players..." Trickster is an example of one of these Jungian archetypes, and in modern literature he presents as a character archetype, not necessarily supernatural or divine, therefore better described as a stock character. In mythology, folklore and religion, a trickster plays tricks or otherwise disobeys normal rules of conventional behavior. It is said, that he is “The great saboteur parading around in all its glory, droning on, repeating his message with gusto of doom and gloom, if only we follow him!” The trickster deity breaks the rules of the gods or nature, sometimes maliciously, but mostly with ultimately positive effects. Usually masculine, he can be cunning or foolish or both; he is often very funny even when considered sacred or performing important cultural tasks.
It is he, through his creations that destroys or points out the flaws in carefully constructed societies of humanity. He rebels against authority, pokes fun at the overly serious, creates convoluted schemes that may or may not work, plays with the Laws of the Universe and is sometimes his own worst enemy. He exists to question, to cause us to question and not accept things blindly. At this point, I want to stop and thank this man for showing us a part of us that needs to be examined and discarded. He came into this incarnation to play this role, and we can be grateful for this mirror of the shadowy side of self. I believe Trump is, and has been caught in an archetypal web for most of his life. Just look at his business dealings and it is easy to see that he is a saboteur extraordinaire. Like the trickster, he gets enmeshed within his own thinking and is driven by inner forces that ultimately disenfranchises him from the outer world.
The trickster appears when a way of thinking becomes outmoded and needs to be torn down and rebuilt. He is the Destroyer of Worlds and at the same time the savior of us all. The trickster is an important archetype in the history of man. He is considered the wise-fool. Through Trump, he is playing out on the great political stage of life today, showing himself in the mirror of our lives. Pointing fingers at us, and saying, yes you are all that! In deeper exploration, and since we are One, we have two choices. We can accept that part of him that lives in and through us and make it acceptable behavior and revel in this new freedom. Or, say yes I see you living within me, although I choose not to follow that part of me down the rabbit hole to a deeper hell--It’s the honorable thing to do, for me and humanity.
Actually, we seem closest to the Trickster when we ourselves are ready to change or are experiencing a major life transition. This can be a personal gift of growth in humility and understanding if allowed in, observed and let go. This gift of knowledge is for our planet as well as for us. Because we live in a dual reality of opposite polarities, yin/yang, male/female, good/ evil, God/Devil or Trickster. Having seen how everything in physical reality has an opposite, we can then apply further that everything in creation is two; since nothing has meaning without the existence of its opposite. If this is true, then we can also say the reverse; that these two things are one thing. Like a coin. It is one thing, but has two sides; heads and tails. Therefore, in a world of duality, there is this or that, but in a world of polarity, there is only this and that, e.g. The glass is half full and half empty.
This is important distinction, because from a quantum mechanics perspective, our reality is created by electromagnetic energy fields, with poles of positive and negative energy. This is much like a game. In order to win the game, you must create balance. The trickster is the ultimate in keeping us off kilter, balance is beyond his realm. You can beat the trickster though if you ignore the challenges he brings. However, there are times the Trickster brings lessons to our conscious mind to experience, personally and as a society. Within duality, he represents the lower frequency emotions: the aggressive side of him seen as jealousy, anger, self-destruction, rage, depression and mental illness.
He hides in the shadow represented by qualities that aren’t accepted into awareness. It can harass us unmercifully, but always has a gift for us; a missing quality, an attitude needed to cope, or self-realization. The trickster archetype can haunt everything we work for through self-sabotage, although this energy pattern is one of the most important archetypes in the history of humankind. He rebels against authority and plays with the Laws of the Universe also known as the Laws of Attraction and at times, he is his own worst enemy. He appears when a way of thinking becomes outmoded, needs to be torn down and rebuilt. He comes to us through Trump to cause you to pause and look at the world around you. His energy is manifesting the pain and suffering you are seeing. Let go of the energy, be neutral with it, and the stage of your life right’s itself! Let go of his hold on you, and you will see the world differently. He is the Divine Masculine on steroids, and out of control.
Ultimately, archetypes carry both feminine and masculine energy that give us wisdom and tools. Drew Gerald says, this constant push and pull between opposite polarities is what makes our world turn (literally) and the quest for balance is very important… being able to understand this game of sorts and realizing that there’s a higher level going on (it is yang, but yang is actually just energy, and so is yin – they’re the exact same thing, just switched). Without positive there would be no negative. Without the masculine there would be no feminine. Each polarity inherently needs it’s opposite to exist. (1) When working in harmony, the sacred union of the divine feminine and masculine can unite, heal and create anything, manifesting a divine new world. In seeing the world differently, allowing more in without judgment, we begin to shape our world how we want it. The synergy created by this balanced union catalyzes the forces of creation into beauty and harmony, at least as much as this dualistic world will allow. Once you know how to just be (ascended duality), the idea of doing things (duality) can be seen from a much more enlightened view.
On one side, the Divine Masculine represents a spiritual, psychological, archetypal ideal—the best and most inspiring, elevating, and restorative aspects of masculine expression and manifestation in the universe. He, along with the Divine Feminine, exists on a transpersonal, universal level that manifests through an individual’s psyche and becomes thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors. (2) Each one of us, man and woman, carries within our psyche both masculine and feminine archetypes. Both acts as a mirror of the Self, revealing aspects that need compassionate attention and support to become one’s highest potential. On the flip side, the Divine Feminine (energy pattern) is experiencing a re-emergence, a rebirth into the collective consciousness. For centuries she has been downplayed, demeaned, removed from her place of honor and reverence by the dominant patriarchal culture. We are now in a time when the Divine Feminine is the subject of discussion and expression, regardless of whether or not one recognizes this and she is beginning to receive the respect and devotion she deserves. She represents the supreme level of feminine expression and manifestation in the universe. She comprises the best of the metaphorical symbols of the modern day divine feminine, playing out on the stage of this planet.
There are many with recognizable names, although a few readily spring to mind, each taking up the baton in their unique ways. First Lady Michelle Obama, attorney by profession, works for children’s health and education. Amal Clooney, as an attorney is an activist for human rights; both are the epitome of the Divine Feminine in all ways. Then there is Hillary Clinton as an expression of the divine feminine. I read that she doesn’t fit the profile, doesn’t currently wear dresses, etc., etc., etc., and a whole host of other patriarchal ideals. But, I beg to differ and here is why. She has a lifelong pattern of energy that is dedicated to other women, children and families, to compassionately raise the awareness worldwide of human rights in general, and women’s rights in particular. The divine feminine, along with other archetypes, allows expression through her hard work and diligence. When you work for women, children and families, you also work to make life better for men, because better families make for a much better society and men reap the benefits as well!
All of this begs the question. Why are these and many other women here, at this particular time and place right now? Working in their own arenas right in this moment of time? Because as a society, we need to grow past separation, integrating all of our energies into a balanced synthesized of Oneness. Most mature individuals integrate both feminine and masculine energy to become whole, balanced people. Within this, there is an incorporation of intellect and compassion; power and creativity; coherence and congruence. All leading us towards harmonious, conscious awareness of life and the world. Trump is part of a long string of energies, since 2001 that is here to open our eyes to the separation happening on this planet (black/white, red/blue, Muslim/Christian, male/female, America/other, etc.). Each day, as we become more aware of our energy, we see that somewhere we long for integration of all of who we are, and as we eliminate the chaotic energy around us, we expand to higher states of consciousness. When we combine our masculine and feminine energies and become whole, we come closer to this realization and we are not alone. As we all awaken, we lift up and deepen our spiritual Self, we create a new humanity. The more we awake from our trance of separation, lifting out of the “tribal communities” that keep us stuck, the more empowered all of humanity becomes. When we let go of the past, mirrored to us by the Tricksters of the world, we open the door to genuine healing and connection as One people and One planet.
