Self-Hypnosis: Challenging Self-Limiting Beliefs!
Most of us learn both productive and nonproductive thinking during childhood and we move through our lives in somewhat of a automatic daze for years. Many times we begin the process in childhood, listening to those around us and never realize we are on the path that takes us away from our best interest. For the most part this works for us, if we are hearing those good things. We no longer think when we tie our shoes; we simply use the memory of learning to do this job. As we progress, we even drive, cook, bathe and many other activities in this automatic drive, shifting gears without real awareness. This is a good thing, it helps free up our thinking processes.
The entire human race is habituated to using a kind of self-hypnosis in either positive or self-sabotaging way. We have even learned to visualize those responses for maximum effort. Unfortunately, driven by anxiety or down right fear of a happening, we actually promote the very thing we have fear of happening. Then the media works on that fear by targeting those things that could potentially happen, driving it into awareness with repetition, hype, and sensationalism, wreaking havoc on our emotional systems. The challenge is to be informed, and not over stimulated with images, thoughts of “what if’s, could be’s, etc.”.
The way to turn this thinking around is to reframe the message to self and refocus our natural tendency to engage in self-hypnosis into an enhanced version of something that works better for us. There is a lot we can do for our self, using self-hypnosis. Hypnosis is often described as a sleep-like trance state, it is better expressed as a relaxed state characterized by focused attention, heightened suggestibility and vivid fantasies. Pictures more easily influence the subconscious mind than simple words. The pictures or fantasy scenes that we hold in our mind for an extended period of time tend manifest seem real at times and actually, the brain doesn’t always know the difference. That is why visualization is a faster way of realizing our dreams. So, getting the most out of a self-hypnosis process begins with a relaxed state of mind. Along with a few preprogramed affirmative suggestions along with visualizations. If you are trying to counteract some aspect of your personality, say a habit we can’t shake, stick with one idea, maybe said in a couple of ways.
Unfortunately, most of us tend to visualize about what we are lacking in our life. As we do this continuously, day in and day out, for months, even for years on end, the lack in our life gets more and more cemented into our lives. These become self-limiting beliefs, because there is no belief put in place or into our awareness about solving the problem, nothing that helps us to come to solution. We can change this by using an altered state of consciousness so the subconscious mind can be easily approached or bypassing the conscious mind. Normally, the conscious mind acts as the gatekeeper of the subconscious mind. We cannot give instructions to the subconscious mind as they are stopped at the level of the conscious mind itself. The only way to approach the subconscious mind in such circumstances is when the conscious mind is in a limbo.
Hypnosis and self-hypnosis allows the conscious mind to relax, to be put to "sleep" so that the subconscious mind can be approached directly. Reprogramming the subconscious mind is the only way to change our limiting beliefs. Hypnosis and self-hypnosis is one easy way of reprogramming the subconscious. I’ll give you a common example that we have all thought from time to time. We may often think to ourselves, I need money, or I am almost broke, what am I going to do? I can’t live without it…But the one I hear most often is, “God if you are truly there, send money! When money (or fill in the blanks) doesn’t come, we feel abandoned by a “God that doesn’t care.”
However, using a different structure of words helps to free the energy around us to increase flow in a better, more productive way. Let’s simply change the message. Many people need money or a new job to get money, or simple more, so I will I’d like to contrast those self limiting belief above with, the self-hypnotic suggestion with a solid and sound affirmative thought: Money flows easily into my life. I am debt free as I attract money naturally. Yes, it seems rather prophetic, but the suggested message to self, changes personal energy to attract what the mind thinks is coming. Money is energy; increase the flow of good energy, and the flow returns to us with our desire. The Universe is the constant supplier of money for me and I always have enough money to fulfill my needs.
So is that it? Money grows on trees in a “rose colored glasses” mentality. Yes, and right, you do feel a “but” coming. There is a bit more to it, because the challenge is to “believe it is possible” not to simply allow it to happen, which is also a challenge to our belief systems. First, we hear what we are saying that awareness along with reframing those self-limiting, self-hypnotic suggestions we do unconsciously—yes; bring them into awareness by listening. Then the most important thing is to correct the message as you go without penalizing yourself with a diatribe of frustration, and a painful self-hypnotic, sure to be repeated discourse of how you “did it again.” Big smile, patience and gentleness coupled with great visualizations that show Source what you are looking for at this time of your life. Going back to the money analogy, I want to share something I heard from a family member once, it was just brilliant! She said, “I bought this carpet for my office, because it reminded me of money (color, design, etc.),” she truly believed she deserved success and loved herself enough to have earned it. She continued, “I love money (the energy, what it does for me), and I just want to remind myself of this thought every day, so when I come to work, I can keep that productive, successful edge!”
I used the topic of money, but the it doesn’t matter what achievement is desired, what new characteristic we are working on, it only matters that we believe we can use more powerful, positive hypnosis, or self-hypnosis to affect great changes in our lives… so allow yourself to dream big!
